Sample Engagements
Project: Workforce Projection Modeling
Client: Fortune 500 Company
A Fortune 500 company retained Numeritics to create a workforce projection model to estimate the composition of its workforce, given historical recruitment and turnover patterns, and to help determine whether the company is on track to achieve desired workforce targets in the next 5 years. We generated forecasts for each subgroup of workers the firm is interested in using distribution functions obtained from the firm’s historical workforce data. We subsequently used these forecasts to conduct a gap analysis by comparing actual targets with projected estimates.

Project: Evaluation of a Smart Parking Project
Client: Foundation/University
Numeritics created and implemented an evaluation framework for a smart parking system that uses historical parking and event data in a prediction model to provide information on the availability of parking within the Pittsburgh Cultural District. The initiative was in response to increased demand for parking spaces and the desire to improve parking experiences through the provision of real-time information on parking availability. Primary data, obtained through both in-person and online surveys of patrons of the Pittsburgh Cultural District events, was utilized for the baseline data analysis, process evaluation and outcome evaluation phases. Secondary data that utilized count data obtained from website use logs was employed for the output evaluation phase. The evaluation framework was robust enough to address the challenges created by the unique environment within which the system was deployed.

Project: Evaluation of a Federally Funded Housing Program
Client: Housing Authority
Numeritics has been tasked with evaluating the effectiveness of a federally funded initiative which enables local housing authorities to design innovative and creative programs that assist low-income families in three major ways: identifying and securing viable employment opportunities, formulating and making progress towards self-sufficiency goals, and increasing housing choice options. This project will involve qualitative analysis using focus groups and surveys, as well as quantitative analysis of the housing authorities’ database, with the project findings informing the design and format of future initiatives.

Project: Health Insurance Market Analysis and Segmentation
Client: Health Insurance Company
This project utilizes data obtained from the U.S. Census Public Use Micro-data Series (PUMS) and provides policymakers and decision-makers with key information on health insurance coverage at the region, state, county or sub-county levels. Information obtained from the analysis allows decision-makers to identify pockets of the population where the uninsured are concentrated, flag individuals that may be at the highest risk of not having health insurance, identify patterns that could be localized to particular population cohorts and use these findings to design targeted policy responses, products and services that better address each sub-group of interest.

Project: Leadership Program Evaluation
Client: Nonprofit Agency/University
We employed a mixed-method approach to evaluate a leadership program for African American males in grades 9 – 12 in the greater Pittsburgh area. While evaluation frameworks for leadership development programs exist, few if any have been applied to minority youth leadership development programs. Our evaluation employs a modified form of the EvaluLEAD framework and is informed by the program goals and the manner in which program events are sequenced. This approach allows us to probe appreciably beyond focusing solely on aspects of program outputs to a more comprehensive framework that takes into consideration the broader influences that often affect program outcomes of this nature.

Project: Data Collection and Program Evaluation for After School Programs
Client: Granting Agency
A foundation commissioned Numeritics to develop a repeatable data collection and program evaluation process for After School programs in the Pittsburgh area. As part of the process, we are working with a cohort of three agencies to determine present data collection and identify agencies’ program outcomes. The process will include establishing baseline data, conducting logic model workshops and working with the agencies to develop a strategy for enhancing their capacity for data collection and the tracking of key performance metrics. We will also be creating a Program Design toolkit that will provide detailed instructions on how the agencies can utilize the data collected and the metrics they are tracking to improve program effectiveness.

Project: Scenario-based Strategic Planning
Client: Manufacturing Firm
A manufacturing entity facing uncertain demand for its products requested Numeritics’ help in fashioning the firm’s long term strategy. The strategy will address the uncertainties created by a variable foreign exchange rate and unknown market demand. In addition, it will also communicate the process down to the level of business units and employees. We achieve these objectives by implementing a planning model that runs simulation exercises to tackle the uncertainties in the strategic planning process and that focuses on the firm's operational activities in a manner that drives the firm's strategic objectives.

Project: Assets and Liabilities Management within a Risk Framework
Client: Finance Company
A finance company wishes to determine how it can minimize exposure to different forms of risk while maintaining the appropriate combination of assets and liabilities in order to maximize shareholders’ wealth. Numeritics developed a model that generated risk-return combinations that maximize profits and ensured the long term sustainability of the financial company.

Project: Design and Implementation of a Corporate Balanced Score Card.
Client: Multilateral Development Bank
As part of the institution’s strategic plan implementation, a multilateral development bank seeks to improve organizational performance by measuring key drivers and performance indicators of its operations and seeks to achieve better alignment between the organization’s strategy and employees' day to day activities. To address these issues, we took the lead in the design and implementation of the bank’s corporate balanced scorecard.

Project: Aligning a firm’s operational activities with its strategic goals.
Client: Pharmaceutical Firm
A pharmaceutical firm that has been struggling with declining profit and reduced market share desires an approach that not only makes the best use of existing facilities, but also provides intangible insights into the future selective expansion of equipment consistent with the firm’s long term goals and objectives. To achieve these objectives, we conceptualized and implemented a Multiple Criteria Decision-making Methodology that focused on aligning the firm’s operational activities with its strategic goals.

Project: Identifying a Knowledge Network
Client: Research Organization
Using a variety of tools from social and dynamic network analysis, we mapped out the knowledge network of a research organization. The purpose of this mapping is to identify areas of experts and expertise in the organization. This information was subsequently used to pursue partnerships, collaborations and joint ventures opportunities.

Project: Economic Impact Study
Client: Nonprofit Arts Organization
In the midst of a multi-year capital campaign, the client’s federal and state funding was in jeopardy, prompting the client’s leadership team to develop clear and accurate estimates of its impact on the region’s already-struggling economy. We worked with the client and its fundraising consultants to develop budget projections, attendance estimates, and visitor spending profiles, which served as inputs for a customized economic impact model based on IMPLAN input/output tables. Our economic impact model became a centerpiece of the client’s renewed campaign, showing its significant positive economic impact on the area’s economy.
